Malaysia’s King ABDICATES: King Muhammad V resigns after ‘marrying Russian’

Malaysia's King has abdicated the throne in a first for the country ending weeks of speculation about his future.

The comptroller said that Sultan Muhammad V, as the supreme commander of the Malaysian Armed Forces, was proud of the sacrifices and devotion shown to him and the country over the years.

The palace gave no reason for why the king had only served two years out of his five-year term, but said the resignation would take effect immediately.

Muhammad V, who was just 47 when he became king, has garnered a reputation for having relatively youthful interests.

Keeper of the Ruler's Seal, Syed Danial Syed Ahmad, said the Council of Rulers held a meeting Monday and set January 24 to elect a new king.

Under the rotation system, the next in line to the throne is Pahang's Sultan Ahmad Shah, followed by Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar of Johor, and Sultan Nazrin Shah of Perak, according to Free Malaysia Today. He was one of Malaysia's youngest constitutional monarchs and has a love for extreme sports.

Malaysia's nine royal households take turns to provide a king, who is chosen through a vote in a Council of Rulers, made up of the nine households, most of which are led by a sultan.

Dahlan said that the king had expressed his appreciation for Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad and the government for their cooperation.

Furthermore, with the circulating pictures of the wedding ceremony where the two can be seen together, Malaysian newspaper The Star states that the nuptials had taken place on November 22 in Barvikha, situated in the suburbs of the Russian capital.

"His Majesty has informed this matter officially to the Malay Rulers through a letter issued to the secretary of the Conference of Rulers", said Wan Ahmad in a statement on Sunday (Jan 6).
