Impeachment? Trump Says He's Too Successful for That

Sen. Cory Gardner of Colorado said Congress should pass bipartisan bills to fund government "while we continue to fight for more border security money".

As for "the wall", Ms Pelosi has said flat out that Mr Trump will not get the $US5 billion to build it. On Thursday night, House Democrats passed legislation to fund eight closed departments through September 30, and the Department of Homeland Security through February 8.

About 800,000 federal workers have been affected by the December 22 closure of about one-quarter of the Federal Government, as Mr Trump withheld his support for new funding until he secures $US5 billion ($7.14 billion) to start building the wall along the US-Mexico border that he promised during his campaign.

The House of Representatives passed two stopgap measures aimed at reopening the government without providing funding for the wall.

How has the shutdown come about?

And while the "blue wave" swept dozens of House Republicans out of Congress last November, Trump's party managed to modestly expand its majority in the Senate to 53-47, meaning Washington gridlock is nearly certain to deepen.

Dubbed the "For the People Act", the legislation marks an effort by Democrats to set a tone of good government as they take the majority following historic gains in the midterm elections.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer met Mr Trump earlier on Friday.

The president is due to resume budget talks with top Democrats and Republicans on Friday.

The normally staid Capitol Hill atmosphere is often jettisoned on the first day of a new Congress, every two years, in favor of a more freewheeling spirit to welcome new lawmakers. New arrivals wander the halls in a daze.

The legislators took office Thursday in the middle of a partial government shutdown.

There were still receptions and flowery speeches to supporters who travelled to Washington for the occasion.

His comments came amid growing momentum among some Democrats to go for impeachment as Congress began again.

Trump confirmed that he privately told Democrats the shutdown could drag on for months or years, though he said he hoped it wouldn't last that long.

This was the opening move, however. Many rank-and-file Democrats ran on pro-impeachment platforms, but with polls indicating only a third of Americans support the idea and a two-thirds majority in the Republican-controlled Senate required to remove the president, they are unlikely to make any sudden moves.

"I'm realistic, not optimistic", he added.

The new congresswoman took her oath of office using a family Koran while wearing a traditional garment stitched by her Palestinian-born mother.

Democrat House Speaker Nancy Pelosi described the meeting as "lengthy and sometimes contentious" and said the parties "cannot resolve this until we open up government". "I'd rather not say it".

They are the majority in the most diverse Congress in United States history, including a record number of women and members of minorities.

Trump tweeted. "How do you impeach a president who has won perhaps the greatest election of all time, done nothing wrong (no Collusion with Russian Federation, it was the Dems that Colluded), had the most successful first two years of any president, and is the most popular Republican in party history 93%?" "Americans elected an authoritarian, racist, anti-immigrant strongman to the nation's highest office", Georgia Democrat Hank Johnson said at an event this week, warning that Hitler "rode a wave of nationalism and anti-Semitism to power" and Trump had only replaced anti-Semitism with 'all Latinos crossing our borders are rapists, drug dealers and murderers'.

While celebrating the Democratic diversity during the swearing-in ceremonies, some on social media highlighted the contrast to the Republican members, who are mostly white men.

The energy of new House, with more than 100 female lawmakers constituting one the most diverse group of lawmakers, is palpable.

The partial shutdown is straining the country's immigration system, worsening backlogs in courts and complicating hiring for employers.

More women than ever before won seats in Congress in the 2018 mid-terms.
