More Android users are buying iPhone this year

Apple will reportedly start assembling its premium iPhone models in India through Foxconn's Chennai plant next year.

The investment could create up to 25,000 jobs, he added. Till date, Apple has assembled only the lower-cost iPhone models that include iPhone SE and iPhone 6S in India via Wistron Corp's facility in Bengaluru.

Leading the transition for Android users is iPhone XR, a relatively cost-effective model that debuted alongside the iPhone XS and top-of-the-line XS Max this year, according to the survey by US-based research firm Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP).

Hon Hai said it does not comment on matters related to current or potential customers, or any of their products. With a starting price of $749, the iPhone XR is this year's cheapest iPhone, and in order to bolster the alleged tepid demand, Apple is now selling the phone for as low as $449 through a trade-in program. Furthermore, India is "the world's fastest growing major mobile phone market", according to the Reuters report.

Full details of Apple's deal with Foxconn are not yet clear and could change.

Moreover, it is also not clear if any iPhone assembly is being shifted to existing Foxconn facilities in China or somewhere else. Moving iPhone production to India mitigates that risk and also helps Apple improve its relations in the critically important Indian market where the middle class is soaring and import taxes on products companies want to sell there are still quite high.

I even cited Apple's not-very-entry-level smartphone as my favourite of the year during MobileSyrup's recent year-end smartphone SyrupCast podcast.

But despite these developments, Apple would be concerned about the declining sales of iPhones overall.
