Apollo 8: Around The Moon and Back

Apollo 8: Around The Moon and Back

Sauvante, then 20, stood on the deck of the USS Arlington in his "dress whites" and saluted the Apollo 8 astronauts after they were plucked by helicopter from the Pacific Ocean. And every little thing they did, during their entire journey, was the first time it had been done before.

The iconic Earthrise shot put our pale blue dot in cosmic perspective as no previous picture could, and gave rise to a phenomenon known as the "Overview Effect": a deep feeling of connectedness, accompanied by the sense that protecting Earth should take priority over society's petty divisions. She and three other former space travelers are holding a celebration at NASA's Kennedy Space Center on Friday, 50 years to the day Apollo 8 launched. "I think the space shuttle was a serious error". In a recent interview, Anders criticized NASA's plans to one day send humans to the surface of Mars. Lovell bought the coat for his wife and arranged its fancy delivery before liftoff. His wife came down and asked, what are you doing? And she said, well, that's natural.

LOVELL:.Most of the religions. In the second of two television broadcasts, the crew of Apollo 8 read a Christmas message to the people of Earth.

"'Oh, my God, look at that picture over there!" Similarly, the Green Revolution officially started in 1968, courtesy of USAID, while increasing harvests it drove us towards today's unsustainable food system. We were thinking about reciting the Genesis. A half-century later, only 24 US astronauts who flew to the moon have witnessed these wondrous sights in person. I always say they had very lunch bucket names: Frank and Bill and Jim.

It's a long, long, long, long way from Gary to the far side of the moon.

ANDERS: [Laughs] You got a color film, Jim? America in 1968 had already experienced so much anguish - the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy, race riots in United States cities, the bloody Tet offensive in Vietnam.

1968 - a year filled with political turmoil, division, and tragedy was coming to a close. At almost four times farther away than Apollo 8 was from Earth, when Anders snapped the Earthrise image, the view is spectacular. The Apollo 8 presentation will also be streamed live on Griffith Observatory's YouTube channel. "What's pushing us to go to Mars? That's the only thing that motivated me - beat the damn Russians". He had no interest in exploration. "I'm proud of it, but I can't say it was done by a real photographer". And I was happy.

"Nasa couldn't get to the Moon today". Though a friend had told me her truth about Santa, my father's homecoming was all I had wished for and proved Santa existed, at least for another year. In the 1960s and early 1970s, six Apollo missions successfully landed astronauts on the Moon and brought them safely back to Earth. It was never broadcast on any of the paid networks on the way to the moon until the explosion.

"My main concern in this whole flight was to get there ahead of the Russians and get home". On Apollo 13, who actually said the famous words?

"Hand me a roll of color quick, will you", he said.

LOVELL: The way this went was the fact - the explosion occurred.

JACK SWIGERT: OK, we've had a problem here. Lovell confirmed the successful firing of the engines by telling mission control, "Please be informed there is a Santa Claus".

JACK LOUSMA: This is Houston. This is admittedly a pretty commonly used image, but it's gorgeous and also the first time men launched on the massive Saturn V rocket. "And I think in a way we helped to heal it".

And that was how that all came down to pass. There is a big swirling motion just off the East Coast, and then going on over toward the east, I can still see West Africa, which has a few clouds right now.

All this year, we've been taking a look back at the events of 1968. We have had a problem. "It was serendipity saying, 'Humanity, you guys deserve a break, make the most of it'".

Christmas and God bless all of you - all of you on the good Earth'. "And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness".
