Vikings fire OC John DeFilippo after flat performance vs Seahawks

Vikings fire OC John DeFilippo after flat performance vs Seahawks

The Vikings are 6-6-1, coming off of a bad loss to the Seahawks on Monday night.

Zimmer said he didn't get any input from players before making the decision and informed the team of the move Tuesday morning.

Came to the Vikings in 2006 as assistant to head coach Brad Childress, whom he met the previous year during an internship with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Stefanski is his 13th Vikings season and is the longest-tenured member of the coaching staff. To Lurie, the development of his young signal caller Carson Wentz was more important. "He kind of knows how we do things here, No. 1", Zimmer said.

"I think the biggest thing with Kevin is that he's been here for a long time".

You may hear some buzz about Matt LaFleur, given his ties to McVay, but I'd be surprised if his maiden voyage calling plays with the Titans makes him truly coveted, and as I continue to talk to general managers and coaches about this crop of candidates it becomes increasingly hard to say, without question, that this coordinator or that coordinator is definitely getting a head coaching job.

In Minnesota, he replaced Pat Shurmur who took over as head coach of the New York Giants.

Zimmer, who is incredibly easy to read and has no ability to hide his feelings, tipped his hand about DeFilippo when he expressed his frustrations about the Vikings' offense following a 25-20 loss in Chicago on November 18 in a Sunday night game.

That paid off for both sides as Stefanski was named the interim offensive coordinator about 12 hours after the Vikings offense was non-existent on Monday Night in a game that was, at the time, make or break.

"I don't know; we'll see how things develop here", Zimmer said.

The Minnesota Vikings have struggled on offense this year after they signed Kirk Cousins to a massive contract, and they are blaming their offensive coordinator for the lack of scoring output. Kevin is a very brilliant guy.

After entering November with a top-10 offense in the NFL, the Vikings have dropped to No. 17 in the league.

DeFilippo, 40, was hired by the Vikings this offseason.

Despite having explosive playmakers like Dalvin Cook, Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs, the Vikings rank 20th in the National Football League with 21.7 points per game this season. Mike Zimmer, a defensive-minded head coach, wanted to run the ball.

This scenario is believable when you look at Zimmer's history of offensive coordinators, which included Norv Turner quitting in the middle of a season in which the team started 5-0.

In the end, Zimmer shoulders responsibility for the way things played out with his third offensive coordinator since 2016.
