Man held by armed police at UK Parliament

Armed British police used a Taser stun gun to restrain a man after he ran into the grounds of parliament on Tuesday, close to where an officer was stabbed to death previous year, and ignored warnings to stop.

"Stop. Get down", police shouted, the Reuters photographer said.

The man could be seen being held against a fence inside the Carriage Gates entrance.

An eyewitness told the BBC the man jumped over railings before being Tasered by police.

Police say he has been arrested on suspicion of trespassing at a protected site and is not being investigated by the Met's counter terrorism command.

The Mirror reports a suspected "intruder" in the Houses of Parliament has been tasered and pinned to the ground by armed police causing a lock down.

"Enquiries into the circumstances continue", Scotland Yard said.

Security in the area has been heightened since it was the scene of a terrorist atrocity in March 2017 when Khalid Masood murdered the unarmed police officer Keith Palmer.

Police said the incident just before noon was quickly brought under control.

The Commons Press Office later tweeted saying the situation was now over.

The man, who has not been identified, was led away from the scene by police.
