Sparks name Derek Fisher as coach, report says

National Basketball Association champion and former NY Knicks head coach Derek Fisher is back in the coaching ranks. He went 17-65 in 2014-15 as a rookie head coach and was sacked the following season with the Knicks sporting a 23-31 record.

Fisher, a five-time National Basketball Association champion player and former head coach of the New York Knicks, will be introduced at a news conference on Friday in Los Angeles, sources said.

The 60-year-old Agler resigned last Friday, prompting what the team announced at the time as a "comprehensive search" for a successor. "I'm certain Derek will not only build on the Sparks championship culture, but also play an instrumental role in all the work we do in the Los Angeles community".

Fisher becomes the 12 head coach in Sparks franchise history.

The Sparks, led by two-time WNBA MVP Candace Parker, went 19-15 in the 2018 season and lost to the Washington Mystics in the second round of the playoffs.

He went 17-65 in his first full season as head coach. Over the course of his career, he averaged 8.3 points and 3.0 assists per game on 39.9 percent shooting. He was part of the Los Angeles Lakers from 2007 through 2012.

This will be Fisher's second coaching job since his retirement from playing in 2014.
