Skoda Scala Hatchback Unveiled: Walkaround

Skoda Scala Hatchback Unveiled: Walkaround

The company has given an all-new design theme for Scala as the hatchback took inspirations from the Vision RS Concept showcased at the Paris Motor Show earlier this year and we could see a hot hatchback version of Scala sometime in the future. Wheel sizes will range from comfort-orientated 15-inch steels and grow to the sporty, low profile 18-inch alloys. It also comes with a wheelbase 2,649mm and has the largest boot space in the segment with 467-litres. Interestingly, it's the first Skoda model to be based on the Volkwagen Group's MQB A0 platform featuring a "more emotional" design language. Being a Skoda, it comes with nifty features like the ice scraper, brolly holder, optional electric tailgate, and even bag hooks in the boot that prevents bags from falling.

Talking about the auto unveiled, it is 4362mm long, 1793mm wide, 1471mm tall, and has a 2649mm wheelbase, making the Scala larger in every way than the Rapid it replaces.

Skoda says the larger dimensions have helped increase interior space, while cargo space is also up from the Rapid's 384 litres or 1349L with the rear seats folded, to 467L/1410L in the Scala.

There's also a 86kW/250Nm 1.6-litre turbo-diesel, and a 66kW/145Nm 1.0-litre 3-cylinder running on compressed natural gas.

On the tech front, the new Skoda Scala offers LED headlights and taillights as standard, the Virtual Cockpit setup wrapped around a 10.25-inch display and infotainment systems with screen sizes ranging from 6.5 inches to 9.2 inches. The full panoramic glass roof with electrically retractable sunblind is optional. Updates to the car's infotainment system and satellite navigation can be delivered over the air (OTA) via the built-in SIM card, which connects to the Internet. Currently, the first product from the new platform to enter the Indian market will be the Volkswagen T-Cross SUV.

Power and torque outputs range from 70 to 110 kW (95 to 150 PS) and 145 to 250 Nm. The widely used 1.5-litre four-cylinder with 148bhp tops the petrol offering and is available with a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG gearbox. The option of a Sport Chassis Control is also made available, though it is optional.

The compact vehicle, a replacement for the Rapid, is the first Skoda based on Volkswagen Group's MQB A0 platform. "It is an all-new model that sets benchmarks within its segment in terms of technology, safety and design", he said.

In addition to all this, Skoda has also equipped the Scala will various driver assists and safety features including Multi-Collision Braking, blind-spot detecting Side Assist, adaptive cruise control, city emergency braking, etc.
