Tyler Perry pays off layaways at Atlanta Walmarts

Perry, who was born in Louisiana, has owned a home in the Atlanta area for years.

The actor and filmmaker, one of the highest-paid men in entertainment, played Santa and paid off nearly 1,500 people's bills for their layaways at two Walmarts in Georgia, E!

Between the two stores, Perry ended up paying for $432,635 worth of layaways.

"If you have a layaway at either place, and it was there as of 9:30 a.m. this morning, I have paid for all of your layaways for Christmas", Perry said. He says he knows people are struggling and he's just "really, really grateful to be able to be in a position to do this". Putting an item on layaway allows customers to make small payments on items until they pay in full and can retrieve their product. "So, Merry Christmas to everybody".

The Madea creator and actor took to Twitter with a video revealing a good deed he had originally hoped to keep anonymous, "but you know how nothing stays secret these days". "So God bless you, go get your stuff, Merry Christmas!" Eastern Time on Thursday, Dec. 6.

A Walmart manager at the Douglasville location said there's usually about 1,000 layaway accounts at the store during the holidays, according to the newspaper. The mystery man who paid off layaways and other purchases in Derby, Vermont told another customer that he was "Santa".
