Louis Cardinals land superstar slugger they needed in trade for Paul Goldschmidt

In exchange for the six-time National League All-Star first baseman, the Cardinals traded catcher Carson Kelly, right-handed pitcher Luke Weaver and minor league infielder Andy Young to the Diamondbacks. He is a three-time Gold Glove victor and four-time Silver Slugger during his eight-year Major League Baseball career. Goldschmidt is set to earn $14.5 million in 2019, the final year of his contract. This past season, he hit.290/.389/.533 with 33 home runs and 83 RBI in 690 plate appearances while playing above-average defense.

Goldschmidt, 31, is the only NL player to be an All-Star each of the past six seasons - only Mike Trout and Salvador Pérez in the American League have done the same - and that's just the start of his hardware. "We understand that. We've understood that for a long time". "He represents everything it means to be a D-back, and we are very thankful to him for all that he has done for our franchise and our fans", Diamondbacks President Derrick Hall said.

Weaver went 7-11 with a 4.95 ERA previous year with St. Louis, his third with the major league club and joins a pitching staff that combined to post a 3.72 ERA in 2018. The team might be looking to make another splash this winter after missing the playoffs for the past three seasons.
