Kelly expected to resign soon, no longer on speaking terms with Trump

Washington has been abuzz with rumors about Kelly's job status at various moments during his 16-month tenure. On the plus side, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner-who have bristled under Kelly's command-and-control style-are said to be pro-Ayers.

Most of Mueller's other interviewees were part of the Trump election campaign or presidential transition.

"I appreciate his service very much", he added. The announcement comes amid a wider shakeup of staff by President Trump.

"He's a great guy", he told reporters, as he departed the White House for Philadelphia where he will attend the Army-Navy college football game.

Describing his relationship with President Trump as "tumultuous", CNN's Kaitlan Collins on-air reports Kelly is "expected to reign in the coming days".

Kelly's shifting accounts caused his credibility inside the West Wing to plummet, and it never truly recovered, according to officials.

But the story line of Kelly's departure has been protracted for so many months that White House aides often now just shrug.

The retired four-star general and former Homeland Security director tried to bring order to the White House, but he and the president are said to have grown tired of one other in recent weeks.
