Google confirms 2019 shutdown of Allo, focus on Messages and Duo

We built Duo, our simple, high-quality video calling app, so you never miss a moment with the people who matter most.

To cut down to five apps, Google will eventually shut down Hangouts and Google Allo, while Messages, Hangouts Chat, Hangouts Meet, Duo, and Google Voice would continue to be supported.

The company has said that the users will be able to export their conversation history from the app. The app is seeing "strong growth and engagement" according to Google.

A few days after reports emerged that Google is going to kill Hangouts chat app, which has millions of users, the company is trying to clear air about what it is doing to all those gazillion chat apps it has.

"At a certain point, Google appeared to be signaling that Allo would be a reasonable substitution for Hangouts" customer chat functionality.

At the beginning of this year, Google had already removed all developers from Allo.

After the rumours of Allo being killed off surfaced yesterday, Google has confirmed the death knell for the messaging service saying it will "continue to work through March 2019". Unfortunately, it seems that Google has made the decision to bring down its shutters on the app. Google describes Messages' development as having "continued momentum", the reason for its decision to end Allo altogether. The smart messaging app used machine learning to suggest smart replies for a shorter reply time.

While Allo's demise-officially set for March 2019-has been relatively quick, Hangouts has gone through more iterations than I can list here.

The new video sharing feature will prompt you to swipe down to record a message. Hangouts Meet is also for video calls, but geared at groups and meetings. RIP Allo. You weren't long for this cruel world, but at least your death wasn't totally meaningless.

Writing in its bog, a spokesgoogle said it plans to support another one of its chat apps, Hangouts, until it makes two of its enterprise apps, Hangouts Chat and Meet, available for non-paying users.
