Father: Body Found In Costa Rica Is My Missing Daughter

Costa Rica's Judicial Investigation Department (OIJ) identified the body as that of 36-year-old Carla Stefaniak, who went missing during her vacation in San Jose on the night of November 27.

Espinoza said all data gathered indicates the body is Stefaniak's; however, investigators are waiting to compare fingerprints from the body with Federal Bureau of Investigation records and noted dental and DNA records may be used to definitively identify the body as Stefaniak if fingerprints are not conclusive.

Caicedo said the owner of the Airbnb told him a security guard watched his sister get into a auto with her bags at 5 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Stefaniak had traveled to Costa Rica to celebrate her 36th birthday, relatives said.

Reports have confirmed that Carla Stefaniak, who disappeared in Costa Rica last week while she was on vacation, appears to have been found dead on the property where she had been staying. Although the remains have not yet been identified, they were found not far from where Carla Stefaniak, 36, was staying.

Stefaniak's family and friends, who live in Tampa, did not hear from her after she texted them from her Airbnb rental on the night of November 27 to say the power was going in and out. Stefaniak never made it to her Wednesday afternoon flight. It was discovered partially buried in plastic bags in a mountainous area. While her family returned to the USA after the weekend, she chose to stay back. "Her family members are going to Costa Rica to try to find her, and any donation will help them in their search", the description read.

Before the news broke, Stefaniak's family and friends held out hope she was still alive.

OIJ General Director Walter Espinoza said the security guard, identified as 32-year-old Bismarck Espinosa Martinez of Nicaragua, contradicted his own account to police and became a person of interest in their investigation. "We want the world to know that we will never forget Carla", the post on Finding Carla says.

He lived in the same Airbnb where Stefaniak was staying.

During an exclusive interview with ABC Action News, Stefaniak's father, Carlos, said his heart shattered when he saw her body.

Authorities are waiting for autopsy results, which could be released Tuesday.

Espinoza moved to Costa Rica in June 2018. I started sending her birthday messages and no-one had heard from her at all.

She wrote that it was raining there and the lights were flickering on and off.

Both Caicedo and his wife, who had been traveling with Stefaniak, are skeptical she would leave that early because her flight wasn't scheduled until more than eight hours later. "We will update everyone as soon as we know". Later that night, all communication stopped. Greg Zwolinski, a friend of the family, who was in Costa Rica trying to communicate with the authorities, said the family's requests had been rejected twice.
