Indian policeman, civilian killed by stone-pelting mob over 'cow slaughter'

With lakhs of people collected for a "Tabligi Ijtema", a congregation of Muslims, 40 km from Mahaw village where the cattle carcasses were found, the conflict in Bulandshahr village could have got worse.

Abhishek Kumar son of deceased cop Subodh Kumar who was shot dead yesterday during Bulandshahr clashes, on Tuesday presented a fearless face amid the unfortunate loss and asserted that his father always wanted his children to respect all religions.

VHP activist Upendra Raghav, BJP city youth wing President Shikhar Agarwal and Bajrang Dal district coordinator Yogesh Raj have been named in the First Information Report in the wake of the violence on Monday.

Cow slaughter suspicion led to violence; police attacked.

The DGP said, "We in the police force are like family". The state government has ordered an inquiry into the incident.

Asked for details of arrests or police action, he said it was "not a fit occasion" to talk about investigations.

Police officer Kumar declined to say why Singh was transferred from the area and the murder case handed to another officer. Bajrang Dal's national spokesperson Surendra Jain on Tuesday too had denied the involvement of its functionary in the killings and later went on to claim that the incident took place due to the anger of the people.

Many states, including Uttar Pradesh, have started enforcing bans on cow slaughter since the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party came to power in 2014.

His instructions were conveyed by Chief Secretary Anup Pandey to magistrates and superintendents of police of all 75 districts through a video link, an official release said.Adityanath said the district magistrate and other senior police officials of a district would be held personally responsible for any lapse. According to the several villagers of Nayabans, apart from the two minors, the remaining five accused were not even present in the village at the time of the incident, according to Scroll. "There were around 400 people from three neighbouring villages".

In a tweet, the Bulandshahr police said, as reported by The Indian Express, "Please don't spread misinformation". But eyewitnesses, some of whom were watching from the other side of the road, said the violence broke out only after the police fired into the air to try and disperse the crowd.

Police have arrested four of 27 men named in a complaint after a police officer and a man were killed in the northern state's district of Bulandshahr as tens of thousands of Muslims gathered for a religious event.

Agarwal, in the video, claims that it was Singh who created tension in the public over the dead cow carcasses after stopping Agarwal and his aides from taking them to the Chingrawathi police station to file an FIR over the alleged cow slaughter.

The men involved had allegedly turned up in tractors with what they alleged were cow carcasses, and had demanded action in the matter. The inspector died before he could be treated.
