UEFA launches third European club competition from 2021

UEFA launches third European club competition from 2021

Uefa's executive committee is meeting in Dublin and Aleksander Ceferin, its president, is expected to make the announcement today.

However, it is not yet clear how teams will qualify for the competition.

There will be a play-off before that round for the teams who finish second in their UEL2 group and sides who finish third in the groups of the higher tournament.

As reported on UEFA's official website, the competition, now being referred to as "Europa League II", will run in tandem with the existing Champions League and Europa League, featuring 32 teams at the group stage.

Eight groups of four will then proceed to a round of 16 knockout.

In total, there will be 141 games played over 15 weeks, with the victor earning a spot in the Europa League for the following campaign.

The "Europa League II" will not effect the schedule of either the Champions League or the Europa League as games are set to be played on Thursday afternoons.

There will also be a third time slot created for fixtures, kicking off at 16:30.

At least 34 teams will be represented in the group stages of UEFA competitions thanks to the creation of this tournament, an increase from the current total of 26.

"In addition, the committee made a decision to also use VAR at the UEFA Europa League Final 2019, in the UEFA Nations Leagues Finals 2019 and in the final tournament of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship 2019". All member associations will have access to the three club competitions and all associations will keep the same overall access quota as now.

European football's governing body had already committed to using VAR in its competitions from 2019-20 onwards.

"Inclusive competition means more matches for more clubs and more associations".

"UEFA still plans to subsequently extend the use of VAR at the final tournament of UEFA EURO 2020, in the 2020/21 UEFA Europa League (group-stage onwards), and in the 2021 UEFA Nations League Finals".

The Champions League last 16 gets under way in February next year.
