Nick Saban Chokes Up Over Jalen Hurts' Performance in SEC Championship Game

Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray is the victor of The Athletic's Heisman Straw Poll, ending Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa's season-long reign atop the poll by a point margin of 96-71. The second was to his right ankle, which was stepped on accidentally by an Alabama offensive lineman. "We didn't play great but we won the SEC today and we're so happy about that".

"I've probably never been more proud of a player than Jalen", an emotional coach Nick Saban said moments after the triumph. And when he trotted off the field after the winning TD, Tagovailoa was one of the first teammates to greet him. While this one didn't end with the suddenness of that national title game, it hurt just as bad.

The final Coaches' Poll of college football's regular season came out today and, like every other week of the season, Alabama is at No. 1.

Saban kept an open competition through training camp before naming Tagovailoa the starting quarterback prior to Alabama's season opener in September.

Murray finished 25 of 34 for 379 yards and three touchdowns against the Longhorns, leading the Sooners to their fourth straight Big 12 championship. The Crimson Tide had not been in serious trouble all season, beating everyone by at least 22 points, but they showed plenty of grit when finally challenged by the Bulldogs. Alabama went on to win the game by the same score. Twice, on third and short with a chance to extend drives, they failed to convert.

For the second time in less than a year, the Bulldogs squandered a double-digit lead to the Crimson Tide.

"There was a lot of debate about Oklahoma, Georgia and Ohio State", CFP committee chairman Rob Mullens said.
