House Democratic priorities in new Congress: Trump tax returns and tackling corruption

The Democrats have voted overwhelmingly to nominate Representative Nancy Pelosi as the next House Speaker, underlining her strength within the caucus as she strides toward a tougher public contest in January 2019.

The Democratic caucus vote in favor of Pelosi, who served as the first woman speaker from 2007 to 2011, brings her a step closer to the gavel that many expect her to regain.

"If President Trump wants to throw a temper tantrum and shut down some departments and agencies over Christmas, that's certainly within his power, but he has two more sensible options available to him", Schumer said on the Senate floor.

To become speaker when Democrats take majority control, she'll need 218 votes if all Republicans vote against her after lawmakers are seated in January.

"As we end this Congress and turn the page to the next, this is the greatest opportunity the U.S. House will have to meaningfully change the face of House top level staff", said Don Bell, Joint Center Black Talent Initiative director.

Pelosi's office did not return a request for comment. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told earlier this fall she is "not aware of any plans" for the President to release his tax returns.

Wednesday vote comes after 16 Democrats signed an anti-Pelosi letter last week calling for new leadership, though one memberlater reversed himself after getting an accommodation from Pelosi. "It's as simple as that", Phillips said. "It would keep the government open and still provide another 1.3 billion dollars for border security", he added.

In his statement, Costa praised some of Pelosi's moves to elevate new leaders in the Democratic caucus and reach an understanding with the Problem Solvers Caucus, of which Costa is a member.
