Bush's service dog lies next to former president's casket

Four days of events for Bush, who died Friday at age 94, include a state funeral at Washington's National Cathedral and a private service at his longtime church in Houston.

Bush's family posted a picture of Sully on Instagram, saying: "As much as our family is going to miss this dog, we're comforted to know he'll bring the same joy to his new home, Walter Reed, that he brought to 41".

Mr Bush's body is due to lie in state this week ahead of a day of national mourning.

While the services are split between Washington and Texas, many in Kennebunkport, Maine also feel a personal connection to the late president.

Bush spokesman Jim McGrath tweeted a photo of the presidential plane on a tarmac Sunday afternoon.

Sully was assigned to Bush in June to provide support in his daily activities, according to America's VetDogs - an organisation that matches veterans and service dogs.

Sully is named after the airline pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, who landed a passenger jet on the Hudson River in 2009, saving all 155 passengers and crew on board.

Mr. Bush was a decorated World War II fighter pilot who dedicated his life to public service as a congressman, ambassador, Central Intelligence Agency director, vice president and the 41st president, but the AP's tweet focused on his defeats.

He will now work as a service dog, assisting with therapy for wounded soldiers.

Sully can perform a two-page list of commands, including answering the phone and fetching items.

"He was just a high-quality man who truly loved his family", Trump said on Saturday while in Argentina for the G20 summit.

President Bush had been receiving treatment for a form of Parkinson's disease and had been admitted to hospital with a blood infection in April.
