Lloyd Russell-Moyle: MP tells the Commons he has HIV

He told the Press Association: "A few months ago I was giving out awards, congratulating people who have spoken out about their HIV status, saying how courageous they were, and there was a feeling in the back of my mind saying, "Well, if I'm congratulating people, I also need to be so fearless to do that".

On Wednesday, the leaders of Fianna Fáil, Sinn Féin, Labour, Social Democrats and the Green Party underwent HIV tests ahead of World Aids Day, which marks its 30th anniversary this year. "No person diagnosed with HIV today should feel any less able to thrive and enjoy life than anyone else due to their status".

In spite of the availability of lifesaving antiretroviral therapy, mortality among people living with HIV in our Region is increasing.

Russell-Moyle also called on the government to do more to ensure the HIV-prevention drug PrEP is available on the NHS.

At the ceremony, condoms and other HIV preventive materials were freely distributed to participants and hundreds of people voluntarily participated in HIV testing.

"Thanks to activists and campaigners, from Act Up to parliamentarians like Lloyd and Chris Smith, stigma against people with HIV is gradually lessening".

China has 820,756 people living with HIV/AIDS, and 253,031 people had died of AIDS-related diseases as of the end of June, according to a report released at the fifth National Conference on HIV/AIDS in September. Professor Steffani Strathdee at the University of California San Diego says one of the biggest challenges is that HIV often affects people on the fringes of some societies around the world.

For local sexual health workers, their hard work has paid off. Targeting the people most susceptible to HIV risk means taking responsive actions to make it easy for the ones, who are infected but unaware of it, to get to know their status and access treatment, thus starting to work towards suppressing their viral load. This milestone was achieved in an HIV testing campaign being done by ADPP Mozambique through HOPE Maputo project. DAPP Namibia has been running TCE programme for more than 10 years reaching 1.4 million Namibians as a result.
