General Motors News From Ohio, Michigan Could Hurt Trump 2020 Bid

GM will close 5 North America plants, another three elsewhere.

Most of the factories to be affected by GM's restructuring build cars that won't be sold in the USA after next year.

The company has marked a sedan plant in Detroit, a compact vehicle plant in OH, and another assembly plant outside Toronto for possible closure.

The Oshawa announcement also raises questions about the future of GM operations in Ingersoll, which now produces the third-generation Chevrolet Equinox, and the St. Catharines engine operations, which produces engines and transmissions that are shipped to 10 different GM assembly plants across North America.

She said: 'This industry is changing very rapidly, when you look at propulsion, autonomous driving and ride sharing. "I urged GM to at least reallocate some of the production and employees to the Toledo GM plant", he said in the statement.

While GM is buying out and laying off workers in its core auto operations, the automaker has added close to 1,000 people in the past year at Cruise.

"The first thing I said is, 'What can we do?" "He said the ship has already left the dock".

The vehicle history runs deep in Oshawa. The Cruze compact auto will be discontinued in the US market in 2019. The auto produced there is also is built in Mexico.

Even with the higher spending on electric and autonomous vehicles, GM plans to reduce overall annual capital spending to$7 billion by 2020 from an average of $8.5 billion a year during the 2017-2019 period. The junior hockey team, where Bobby Orr once played, is called the Oshawa Generals, and they played at the GM arena until it was renamed in 2016. It also offered buyouts to thousands of workers earlier this year. As Scott Lincicome, a trade attorney and senior fellow at the Cato Institute, pointed out on Twitter, that $1 billion could have paid for a years' salary for 24,000 assembly line workers (who make an average salary of $41,000).

The impact of the plant closure extends beyond GM workers and their families.

Unifor, a union, which represents workers at the GM plant, said in a statement that it received a notification from GM about an upcoming major announcement regarding the Oshawa plant, which is to take place on 26 November.

Reports about GM's plan to close the Oshawa plant in Ontario have proven to be true. That represents just 0.7 per cent of all employment in the province, but 71 per cent of all Canadian vehicle manufacturing jobs.

General Motors Canada will be announcing the closure of all operations in Oshawa, Canada on 26 November, multiple anonymous sources told CTV News Toronto.

After the morning announcement, Barra was to head for Washington to meet with White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow in what was described as a previously scheduled meeting, according to a White House official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the official is not authorized to discuss the meeting publicly.

In the meantime, GM is trying to reinvent how it makes vehicles. Paterson said Monday that the company is still aiming to employ 1,000 engineers, up from 750 now.

Trump said he'd been told that the Chevrolet Cruz model was failing to sell, "but hopefully she's going to come back and put" a different model in.

Some 3,600 production jobs will go in the USA and 3,000 in Canada, as well as 8,100 white-collar roles. "I've been through this before, so whatever happens happens".
