Ernst first female GOP senator elected to Republican leadership ranks since 2009

The election of the new vice chairperson of the Senate Republican Conference marked the first time a woman has been elected to a Senate GOP leadership position since 2010.

In talking to reporters, it appeared he was deciding between the judiciary and finance committees, and meant to announce his decision "within a few days".

Jordan could instead be given the ranking minority position on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, another likely investigatory hotbed in the new, Democratic-controlled House.

"The establishment is trying to hold on, and the American people and Democrats voted for change", Mr. Ryan said.

It was the fifth Republican-held House seat picked up by California Democrats. Roy Blunt of Missouri took Barrasso's old job as Policy Committee chair.

California Republicans, who had a really bad midterm election, did get one good piece of news today, as Kevin McCarthy was elected House Minority Leader in a surprisingly easy 159-43 victory over conservative leader Jim Jordan of OH, a founding member of the ever-fractious House Freedom Caucus.

Texas voters also saw former El Paso County Judge, Veronica Escobar, and state Senator Sylvia Garcia of Houston defeat their Republican opponents, making history as the first Latinas elected to represent the state in the U.S. House.

Although California's 45th is an affluent district, the tax law's near-elimination of the state and local tax, or SALT, deduction made it a net tax hike for numerous district's upper-middle-class residents.

Republican Rep. Jim Jordan of OH says the GOP lost its House majority in the midterm election because it didn't deliver on promises to secure the U.S. -Mexico border, fund President Donald Trump's wall and replace the Obama health care law.

Unlike the 218 votes needed to become Speaker, McCarthy only needed to secure a simple majority of votes from his Republican colleagues to become minority leader, according to a TheHill news daily report.

Jordan, a member of the GOP Freedom Caucus, told party members he would be the best leader to stand up to what's expected to be an aggressive Democratic strategy once they take the leadership reins.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy is running to take over next year's shrunken caucus in closed-door elections that will set the tone for the new Congress.

McCarthy made that argument too, lawmakers said, suggesting that those who lost their races - or came close to losing - didn't work hard enough to sell the GOP's message.

Elections Wednesday will also determine party leadership in the Senate. Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California is trying to win the speaker's post and stifle a rebellion among liberals and younger lawmakers fed up with the calcified leadership.

Most Republicans, though, said the losses don't reflect on Mr. McCarthy.
