Should kids get flu shot or nasal spray vaccine?

Should kids get flu shot or nasal spray vaccine?

"The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare is reminding residents that flu can be serious" said Randi Pedersen, the Idaho Influenza Surveillance Coordinator.

However, the nasal flu vaccine, FluMist, is made from weakened but live virus cells and may cause flu-like symptoms.

"Even though this flu season is now not predicted to be almost as harsh as it was a year ago, you should not put off getting your flu vaccine", said DPH Director Dr. Karyl Rattay.

Ott says it is particularly important to receive the flu shot to protect those within society who cannot receive the flu shot as well as those who are immune compromised.

"I encourage people, even if they don't necessarily want to get a flu shot for themselves, to do it for others, to do it for those they love and those who are in their circle", O'Neal said.

One is that the flu vaccine can give you the flu.

Health officials also reported 183 flu-related deaths among children, although the CDC estimates the actual number of deaths was more than 600.

California State University, East Bay's Student Health Services held a walk-in flu shot clinic between October 30 and 31 at the Student Health Center on the Hayward campus. Even healthy people can become sick enough to miss work or school for a significant amount of time, or even be hospitalized.

The vaccine is also available to carers of older or disabled people, people with reduced immunity, those who are very overweight, residential care home residents and frontline health and social care staff.

"Children under the age of 5 are more likely to be admitted to hospital with flu than any other age group". "But just as importantly, we reduce the risk to our families, friends, and our communities by blocking the spread of the flu".

Last season's flu vaccine turned out to be only 40 percent effective. Washing your hands frequently, containing your coughs and sneezes when in public and avoiding crowds during flu peak season are all good suggestions.
