Pelosi Deserves to Be Next Speaker, She Might Help Add Republican Votes

A big Blue Wavea of Democratic support that could totally destabilise Trump did not quite materialise as he appeared to have held onto his base, even though his suburban support bled.

But blue-collar voters and rural America embraced his aggressive talk and stands.

The new Democratic House majority will end Republican dominance in Washington for the final two years of Trump's first term with major questions looming about health care, immigration and government spending.

The new leadership of the House of Representatives promise an investigation of questionable and illegal actions of Trump, his Cabinet and a corrupt White House.

"Today is more than about Democrats and Republicans, it's about restoring the Constitution's checks and balances to the Trump administration", Nancy Pelosi, leader of the House Democrats, told supporters at victory party. It has been the greatest honor of my life.

Some closely-watched Senate races resulted in Republican wins, including the neck-and-neck race between Texas incumbent Ted Cruz and Democratic challenger Beto O'Rourke.

Trump spent election night watching returns with family and friends at the White House, his shadow looming large over the results. And it made clear the extent to which Trump has remade his party to his own specifications, as he suggested that those who survived were indebted to him, a president who prizes loyalty above all else.

Trump said in a wide-ranging news conference Wednesday that he doesn't want to release his taxes because they are under a "continuous audit".

Winning a Senate majority would have allowed Democrats to apply the brakes even more firmly on Trump's policy agenda and given them the ability to block any future Supreme Court nominees.

With some races undecided as the U.S. mid-term elections wound down last night, the Democratic Party had seized the House of Representatives from Republicans with 218 seats to 193.

It was unclear what leaks he was referring to.

US stock futures pointed to strong opening gains for Wall Street on Wednesday, while the dollar dropped on lowered chances of further USA fiscal stimulus.

The GOP's successes were fueled by a coalition that's decidedly older, whiter, more male and less likely to have college degrees.

The Senate leader is considered to be the third most powerful person in the federal government after the president and the deputy president.

Record diversity on the ballot may have helped drive turnout. That surpasses the record of 84 women set by the current Congress. Women could at best gain one seat in the Senate, potentially beating the record 23 women now in the chamber.

The Democrats elected are also younger, more racially diverse and include more women.

In Florida, Democrat Andrew Gillum lost his attempt to become the state's first black governor, suffering a narrow defeat to Republican Ron DeSantis in a racially charged contest that drew national attention. In recent weeks, he had stormed the states where he could do the most for Republican candidates, several of whom were being outshone by the Democrats' fresher faces.

However, the party will now head House committees that can investigate the president's tax returns, possible business conflicts of interest and possible links between his 2016 election campaign and Russian Federation. Further, Democrats had an underwhelming performance in OH, where gubernatorial nominee Richard Cordray lost and incumbent senator Sherrod Brown won by only six points against a weak Republican. Two Muslims will be among them and that is also another first.

Though a separate case involving similar allegations filed by the attorneys general of Maryland and the District of Columbia is further along, the D.C. case is the only one that has congressional Democrats as the plaintiffs.

China says the relationship between the world's two largest economies is so important that interests on both sides will continue pushing for cooperation regardless of the outcome of USA elections.

And outside Richmond, Virginia, one-time tea party favorite Rep. Dave Brat lost to Democrat Abigail Spanberger, a former Central Intelligence Agency operative motivated to run for office after the GOP vote to gut the Affordable Care Act.

President Donald Trump is warning Democrats against using their new majority in the House of Representatives to investigate his administration. You have to "show the power of the gavel".

Some hurt worse than others.
