Fire-stricken California school concedes playoff football game

Law enforcement authorities in northern California said Friday that five people have died in a wildfire, one of three in the state that have leveled thousands of homes and forced widespread evacuations.

A wildfire that moved so fast that firefighters couldn't hope to stop it quadrupled in size Friday after destroying several thousand buildings and leveling much of a Northern California town of almost 30,000 people, authorities said.

The Butte County Sheriff's Office said Friday the victims were found in the same area in the town of Paradise, near a main thoroughfare heading out of town that was consumed by flames.

Fanned by strong winds, it has scorched 70,000 acres (28,300 hectares) and has not been contained, the California Fire Department (Cal Fire) said.

Malibu, known as the home of many Hollywood stars, has about 13,000 residents and lies along 21 miles of coast at the southern foot of the mountain range.

That was all before the Camp Fire escalated rapidly Thursday, changing the lives of not just the football team at Paradise, but the entire community forever.

After shuffling schedules for the firefighters who would remain, UFA chose to send 11 people and three fire crews. Many homes have propane tanks that were exploding amid the flames.

The 101 freeway is closed as the both the Hill and Woolsey fires have jumped the freeway near Camarillo as well as in Agoura Hills near Malibu.

"This area is an active part of the incident and we can not access it", a posting on the Santa Monica Mountains Twitter account said on Friday.

These numbers make it one of the most destructive blazes in state history, according to California Department of Forestry and Fire protection data.

In Northern California, a wildfire incinerated most of the town of Paradise, population 30,000.

- Driven by howling winds and dangerously low humidity, a brush fire that began in Ventura County but raced over the Los Angeles County line continued a relentless march toward the Pacific Ocean Friday, forcing thousands of people from their homes as evacuation orders were imposed for the entirety of Malibu.

Kim Kardashian, Alyssa Milano and Melissa Etheridge were among thousands fleeing from their homes.

Many celebrities expressed concerns about their homes as the fire crept within several miles.

Rescuers used a bulldozer to push abandoned cars out of the way in order to reach a hospital and evacuate patients as the fire engulfed the building, Butte County Supervisor Doug Teeter said.

"Just landed back home and had 1 hour to pack up & evacuate our home. I pray everyone is safe", she wrote. The fire spread so fast and so furiously that hard-pressed firefighters couldn't be everywhere at once. There were reports of people abandoning their vehicles trapped in heavy traffic, clutching children and running for safety under blackened skies.

Fire officials have issued evacuation notices for parts of Chico, a town of 93,000 people north of Sacramento.
