The bar is near several colleges, and is a popular spot for students Wednesday nights. But what unfolded after he headed out for the Borderline Bar & Grill never crossed his father's mind.

The US has suffered from mass shootings for decades, but most of the deadliest have occurred in recent years.

"When I talked to the parishioners there, I followed up on the rabbi".

"I came down and just found kids everywhere - hiding behind trees, behind bushes, behind cars, in shock, bleeding, carrying people who had been shot", she said. "But I've learned, it doesn't matter what community you're in, it doesn't matter how safe your community is. My life has changed now forever".

The sheriff said Long is believed to have killed himself after opening fire on the crowd.

He could not immediately provide information on the extent of the victims' injuries.

At least 12 people, including Ventura County Sheriff's Sgt. Ron Helus, were killed when Long, a 28-year-old former Marine, opened fire inside the venue.

Kuredjian said that shots were still being fired when sheriff's deputies arrived on the scene.

The shooting, which also killed a law enforcement officer, took place at the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, California. "We thank everyone for your prayers and ask for privacy at this time".

University President Chris Kimball said Mr Meek "heroically saved lives in the incident".

Fearing the worst, Mr Coffman tracked his son's phone and realised it was sitting motionless inside the club.

"My son was on his way to fulfilling his dream of serving his country", Jason Coffman said.

Thousand Oaks is a suburb of Los Angeles, located about 40 miles northwest of downtown. Many of those at the bar were regulars, she said.

"If they survived that, they'll survive this", Edgar said.

Dean said the other prior encounters were a traffic accident and an incident when he was the victim of battery at a bar.

"Hey, I gotta go handle a call". They responded to a call at a house in April where the suspect was acting irrationally. He said Cody had just wrapped up a season of being an umpire in a youth baseball league.

The suspect, who has not been identified, was found dead inside the bar, Dean said. It will start at Los Robles Hospital and end at the Venture County Medical Examiner's Office, according to reports.

Who are the other victims?

"Ron was a hardworking dedicated sheriff's sergeant", said Dean, trying to hold back tears.

A friend, Sgt. Eric Buschow, said Helus took on some of the toughest assignments, was on the SWAT team for much of his career and worked in narcotics and investigations.
