'Multiple injuries' in California bar shooting: Fire department

Authorities haven't identified what motivated Long to open fire during college night at Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, around 40 miles (64 kilometres) from downtown Los Angeles.

Sheriff Dean said: "Ron was a hardworking dedicated sheriff sergeant".

Hundreds of people lined the streets of Thousand Oaks, Calif. on Thursday to honor fallen Ventura County Sheriff's Sergeant Ron Helus, who was killed while responding to a mass shooting at a bar overnight.

"And tonight, as I told his wife, he died a hero", added the sheriff, choking back tears.

"There's no doubt that they saved lives by going in there and engaging with the suspect", said Dean, who was set to retire on Friday.

Mr Dean said his department had several previous contacts with the former Marine including a call to his home in April, when deputies found him acting in an irate and irrational manner. Officials believe Long took his own life. "There is blood everywhere and the suspect is part of that, and I didn't want to get that close and disturb the scene and possibly disturb the investigation".

"I've heard anywhere from 150 to 200 people in there. Pop, pop, pop. There was probably three or four, I hit the ground", John Hedge told CNN affiliate KABC. He shot the security guard.

The gunman opened fire at around 11:20 p.m. (1:20 a.m. CT Thursday).

At least 12 people have been killed, including a police officer, at a country music bar in Thousand Oaks, California. "And that's what's really blowing my mind, it's a really safe area".

It was "college night" at the bar, and many students were there to learn the country two-step.

People at the bar fled from all exits, broke through windows and hid in the attic and bathrooms, the sheriff said.

The police officer was injured when he arrived at the scene with colleagues and "attempted to neutralize the threat", Ventura County Sheriff's Office Capt. Garo Kuredjian said.

Authorities are investigating reports that the gunman used a smoke bomb but said they had not found anything to support this.

Between eight and 15 people suffered minor injuries and one person was a gunshot wound, Dean said at the news conference.

Students from several nearby universities frequented the popular bar.

Nick Steinwender, Cal Lutheran student body president, told KTLA-TV he immediately started receiving messages about the shooting, and he and his roommate went to the scene to offer rides back to campus or moral support.

"He told her, "'Hey, I have to handle a call. He said, "I was concerned because I knew he had been in the military".

They were likely unarmed, he said, though he could not yet confirm that information, nor could he yet say if and how they had assisted victims or confronted the gunman. Then Knapp heard gunfire and saw a young woman at the counter shot repeatedly. "I don't know if she is alive", he said.

Among those outside the hospital was Ellen Rivera, who said she had survived the October 2017 slaughter of 58 people at an outdoor concert in Las Vegas - the worst mass shooting in USA history.

A few weeks after the Vegas shooting, the bar held a benefit concert for five people from the area who were killed, and now-eerie social media posts show a number of survivors holding up a "Route 91" sign inside the bar at a six-month anniversary event. "From what I heard, the gunman started shooting at the front desk".

He said both they both managed to escape.
