Dems gain House; GOP retains Senate

After knocking off a couple of Democratic incumbents so far, Republicans could not only defend but potentially increase their 51-seat majority as additional races are called throughout the night. In addition, Fox News is calling this for the Democrats.

They also could force Mr Trump to scale back his legislative ambitions, possibly dooming his promises to fund a border wall with Mexico, pass a second major tax-cut package or carry out his hardline policies on trade.

A simple House majority would be enough to impeach Trump if evidence surfaces that he obstructed justice or that his 2016 campaign colluded with Russian Federation.

President Trump called Pelosi Tuesday night to offer congratulations, her office said.

"Lavrov also reiterated Moscow's position that it is not meddling in USA elections". You see the results of that hard work paying off tonight.

"We can raise all boats, together, and we are (doing that) in New York", Cuomo said.

Still, about one-third of voters said Trump was not a factor in their votes.

To stem Republican losses, Trump sprinted through mostly white regions of the country, interjecting dark and foreboding warnings about what Democratic power would mean for the nation.

But the Democrats' push into Trump country remained uncertain.

"We always knew these races are going to be close", said Rep. Katherine Clark of MA, co-chair of House Democrats' recruitment efforts.

Americans are voting for all 435 seats in the House and 35 out of 100 seats in the Senate, a as well as state governors.

With 62 percent of the electorate reported, Republican Mike Braun was holding a 12 percent lead in the crucial Senate showdown in IN with incumbent Democratic Sen.

The result was all but assured when Republican Kevin Cramer ousted North Dakota Democratic Senator Heidi Heitkamp and when Republican businessman Mike Braun ousted Senator Joe Donnelly in Indiana.

Some of the biggest Democratic stars of the campaign season were struggling.

Meanwhile, Ted Cruz fended off a spirited challenge from Democrat Beto O'Rourke and Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn triumphed in Tennessee. Both Republicans Rick Scott in the Senate race and Ron DeSantis in the governor's race hold leads in Florida. Democrats also captured governorships in MI and IL.

Liz Mair, GOP strategist, said: "Tomorrow is probably going to be pretty unpleasant for Republicans. It's going to be tough for them to win the House". Still, Republican voters tended to be overwhelmingly supportive of the president.

S&P equity index futures erased most of their gains on expectations Democrats would seize the House. Democrats are relying more upon women, people of color, young people and college graduates.

As polls begin to close, the White House is stressing the effort President Donald Trump put into a political ground game aimed at putting Republicans in the win column for Tuesday's midterm elections.

The victory will return Democrats to the bargaining table in Washington in January, giving them a check on Trump's policy agenda and subpoena power to investigate the president.

Pelosi said the election Tuesday was about more than Republicans and Democrats. "All the GOP has is the other half of Congress, the Supreme Court, and a president who does whatever he wants".

Trump's Republican coalition is increasingly older, whiter, more male and less likely to have a college degree.

Investors often favor Washington gridlock because it preserves the status quo and reduces uncertainty, even though many investors this time around had been hoping for a continuation of the Republican agenda.

"While midterm elections are typically referenda on the president, this one is even more so because Trump is such a divisive leader and he has done everything he could to place himself at the center of key campaigns", says Jordan Tama, associate professor at American University's School of International Service.
