Arsenal boss Unai Emery believes Danny Welbeck's injury affected his players

Sporting ended the game with 10 men when ex-Barcelona defender Jeremy Mathieu was shown a straight red card after fouling Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who was clean through, although the hosts could not find a winning goal.

The Arsenal striker landed awkwardly after going for a challenge in the 25th minute and required immediate attention.

Welbeck was quickly surrounded by his team-mates, with Matteo Guendouzi visibly shocked by the incident, before receiving oxygen and being carried from the pitch.

Supporters have taken to social media to say how "heartbreaking" it is while TV presenter and lifelong Arsenal fan Piers Morgan was among those to say how "gutted" they are for Welbeck.

Welbeck was rushed to hospital after the match and Emery reckons he has broken his ankle.

But the fixture was overshadowed by the injury to England global Welbeck, who was carried off on a stretcher. "The game in Lisbon was also hard but we won and now we can say those three points were very important". "We think [they are] serious injuries".

"We worked well with very good commitment in a hard game".

"But when he had the injury we needed to play with a right-back which was the reason we played with Ainsley [Maitland-Niles]".

The Gunners' tie was enough to send the team to the knockout stages of the competition, joining Premier League rivals Chelsea. Then every match we want the best performance from every player.
