History is made in some Mid-term races around the country

Voters in Minnesota and MI elected the first two Muslim women to serve in the U.S. Congress, a former refugee who fled Somalia's civil war and a Detroit-born Palestinian-American.

"I am so honored to share both the ballot and the stage with the many visionary, bold women who have raised their hand to run for public office", said Ayanna Pressley, who became the first black woman elected to Congress from MA.

The high-profile cycle that produced a record number of women contenders and candidates of colour meant several winners will take office as trailblazers, marking firsts for their race and gender. In Kansas, Sharice Davids, a Democrat running in a suburban Kansas City district, will become one of the first Native American women elected to Congress, and the first openly LGBT person to represent Kansas at the federal level.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 29-year old Latina also became the youngest woman to serve in the US House after winning at the polls.

Democratic Colorado Governor-elect Jared Polis arrives onstage with running mate Dianne Primavera on November 6, 2018 in Denver.

Election Day brought some big and historic wins for Democrats across NY. On Tuesday, James won her seat for New York State Attorney General.

All across the country, female candidates ran for office and won in record numbers.

Jahana Hayes is the first black woman elected to represent CT in Congress. Hayes, the 2016 National Teacher of the Year, will be serving Connecticut's 5th Congressional District, which includes areas in the northwestern part of the state.

With no challenger on Election Day, Pressley made it official that she'll be the first black person representing MA in the House. Elsewhere, the number of female governors expanded, with the Democrat Michelle Lujan Grisham becoming the first Democratic woman of color elected governor in the US.

The Republican incumbent lost her bid for a second term, going down to Democrat Elwood Caudill Jr. for clerk of Rowan County in north-eastern Kentucky.

On Tuesday, she trounced Republican opponent Anthony Pappas in her constituency, a Democratic stronghold in a diverse part of Queens and the Bronx, US media reported.

In Colorado, Jared Polis will be the country's governor openly elected as gay.

IL state Rep. Juliana Stratton is the first black woman elected as IL lieutenant governor.

In her acceptance speech Tuesday night, Ocasio-Cortez said, "In the wealthiest nation in the history of the world, our greatest scarcity is not a lack of resources but the absence of political courage and moral imagination". Stratton ran with Democratic gubernatorial candidate J.B. Pritzker, who campaigned for an expansion of health care, job creation and early childhood education.
