His 35-meeting suspension is one of the biggest on record in the Melbourne Cup.

Fan favourite Red Cadeaux, who finished second on three occasions, was pulled up in the final straight of the 2015 edition of the race and it was later confirmed he suffered a break in his left foreleg.

Limb injuries are the most common cause of death for racehorses on the track.

The Daily Telegraph has reported the star United Kingdom galloper had a fractured right shoulder and "could not be saved".

In a statement the RSPCA said there was a growing number of Australians who felt uncomfortable watching horse racing.

On the injury sustained by The Cliffsofmoher, Joseph O'Brien - representing his father Aidan - said: "Unfortunately these things can happen to a horse galloping around a field at home".

The Chairmen and Directors of the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) later extended their sympathies, with Flemington Racecourse tweeting their condolences, "To the Williams family and the connections of The CliffsofMoher, which was euthanised after he went amiss in the Melbourne Cup".

"The day was sponsored by Dubai Racing Club, that was the day I rode four winners, I won the trip away and rode four winners and that put my name under the nose of Sheikh Mohammed and rode for them later in that spring late in 2002, that is where it all started", he said.

McEvoy's association with Godolphin ignited the day he rode Beekeeper in the Melbourne Cup, finishing third behind Media Puzzle in 2002.

"Cliffsofmoher, he's melting like an ice-cream at the moment", Seven commentator Richard Freedman said.

However Appleby, who has plundered spring carnival riches for several years, and won Aussie Group Is with Jungle Cat and Polarisation, admitted he had no idea whether he was going to cash in again as the rain poured down before Cross Counter's Melbourne Cup tilt. "He's really sweating up badly".

Cliffsofmoher broke down just after passing the post the first time.

It tarnished a thrilling win by Cross Counter, who saluted ahead of Marmelo and A Prince Of Arran.
