Amazon may be closing in on second headquarters location

The retail giant is said to have held "advanced discussions" about creating a second headquarters in the city which would bring with it 50,000 new jobs.

Speculation is also building that an announcement about which city will get HQ2 could come this month after Tuesday's midterm elections, according to the Washington Post story.

What's more, shortly after the Post report was published, Amazon director of economic development public policy, Mike Grella tweeted: "Memo to the genius leaking info about Crystal City, VA as #HQ2 selection".

The Washington metropolitan area has always been considered a top contender.

The Post reports recent discussions about placing HQ2 in Crystal City include how to move employees, specific buildings, and how to make the announcement.

Amazon, which is headquartered in Seattle, is seriously considering an area known as Crystal City, a large residential and office complex in Arlington, Virginia, just south of Washington, the Post reported, citing unidentified sources. Some of the frontrunners are allegedly between a location in Crystal City, Northern Virginia, or potentially a location close to Austin, Texas. For starters, Amazon may be having similar discussions with other finalists.

At a conference in NY on Thursday, CEO Jeff Bezos - who said in October that Amazon will decide before the end of the year where HQ2 will be - told attendees the decision would ultimately be based on his intuition. Amazon declined to comment on his remarks.

Amazon is expected to make its decision before the end of the year.

Amazon says it plans to make $5 billion in capital investments alone in the city it chooses, and that its headquarters injected an additional $38 billion into the local economy in Seattle, generating an additional $1.40 for every dollar the company spent. He's the owner of The Washington Post and owns a home in the area.
