Pep Guardiola sends ominous Raheem Sterling warning to rivals

It was the Argentine's 150th league goal for City, a landmark that moved him level with Michael Owen in eighth place on the Premier League's all-time goalscoring list.

Instead, City completely battered Southampton in the first-half.

Sterling has taken his haul to six goals in nine games this term, having netted 10 times in his first season under Guardiola.

"The team showed me some signals that in some positions we are not stable enough", the City boss explained to The Independent, specifically referring to set-pieces.

Manchester City defeated Southampton 6-1 at the Etihad Stadium last night to move back above Liverpool at the top of the Premier League.

They head into the Wednesday's European clash in very confident mood after picking up their ninth win of 11 in the Premier League over the weekend.

Sterling unselfishly squared for Sane in second-half stoppage time to allow the Germany global to score City's sixth, and he said the winger often does the same in return.

City were rampant from the off and took the lead after just six minutes when Wesley Hoedt's attempted clearance of a Leroy Sane cross ended up in the back of his own net.

Guardiola was asked if Sterling can now be considered amongst the world's best players, but replied that the England global still has work to do to be ranked as such.

City won 32 of their 38 games last season, scoring a record 106 goals and amassing a record 100 points.

Alvaro Morata continued his recent resurgence with two goals and fellow Spaniard Pedro added a third as Chelsea proved too strong for Roy Hodgson's Palace.

Chelsea reacted by bringing on dangerman Eden Hazard and Mateo Kovacic for Willian and Ross Barkley, and within minutes the home team was back in front in the London derby. "The boys started really well and we were fantastic without the ball, not just with the ball".

And a 3-0 win over Shakhtar in Ukraine two weeks ago means City top their Champions Leaue group, and are one point clear of Lyon.
