Just kidding! Andrew Lincoln signs on for series of WALKING DEAD movies

The final episode of The Walking Dead to star Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes has aired. Additionally, these are supposedly going to be high-quality films in terms of their production value, so expect this to be on the level of something closer to a cable film than a standard network TV film.

Death is always in the air over on The Walking Dead.

Instead, he was picked up by Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh) in the helicopter that was first introduced on the show about a year ago.

"We believe this is a world and narrative with many possibilities and opportunities for character development and we're excited to expand the series into a franchise that can live across multiple formats", said David Madden, president of original programming for AMC, SundanceTV and AMC Studios. "We've seen Netflix make these, basically, studio films for people to watch in their homes, and we're going to be doing the same sort of thing here".

Did Rick Grimes die last night?

Also included in the clip are shout-outs from, among others, Danai Gurira (Michonne), Steven Yeun (Glenn), Lennie James (who now plays Morgan on spinoff Fear the Walking Dead), IronE Singleton (T-Dog) and Josh McDermitt (Eugene).

This news comes as tonight's episode "What Comes After" defied expectations in a major way.

London-born Lincoln, 45, announced his Walking Dead departure earlier this year and viewers have been waiting eagerly to see how his character leaves the show.

News of three planned Walking Dead movies may come as a shock to some, but in reality, talk of making these films has swirled for a while now.

"I wanted to finish telling his story in the way that we began it", he told The Hollywood Reporter. "There's a lot of story to tell".

"Oversaturation is a word I've been thinking about".

Starting off with a non-verbal declaration of respect from the recently deceased and much beloved Scott Wilson, the video above features current TWD stars Lauren Cohan, who is slated to step back from the show soon herself, and Norman Reedus.

Jon Bernthal returns to The Walking Dead fold on Sunday's episode, and though we don't have details about the nature of his return we do know what he looks like thanks to Greg Nicotero, who shared this photo of Lincoln and Bernthal on set.
