Former Cavs assistant suing team for age discrimination

Former Cavs assistant suing team for age discrimination

It may be time for J.R. Smith and the Cleveland Cavaliers to part ways.

Smith has seemingly fallen out of the Cavs' rotation as the youth begin to take over for Cleveland following the departure of LeBron James.

Smith also said management's suggestion that he step away from the team was unacceptable. "They know. They don't want me here, so they obviously know". After receiving little to no playing time through the team's first eight games, Smith has expressed his frustration by reportedly confirming he wants a trade.

Smith, who hasn't played at all in 3 of Cleveland's 7 games this season and seen sharply reduced minutes in the other 4, said it wasn't just the lack of playing time, but a lack of communication about it, that bothered him.

The 33-year-old Smith said he was told earlier this season that the Cavs would be focused on playing their younger players to develop them for the future.

"They asked me if I wanted to be around the team and if I didn't I could leave and go home and do whatever", he said.

He was briefly in the rotation before coach Tyronn Lue was sacked on Sunday.

"They know", he said.

A native of Freehold Borough, NJ, Smith is in his 15th National Basketball Association season and fifth with the Cavaliers.

Smith said the hardest part is that he is not getting a chance to compete anymore, which has led to his trade request. "I can't do that to these fans, I can't do it to the city".

Smith is averaging a career-low 2.5 points per game on 23.1 percent shooting this season.

"The Cleveland Cavaliers had an 'option, ' in its sole discretion, to extend the contract of its former Assistant Coach Jim Boylan one additional year for the 2018-2019 National Basketball Association season".
