Fidan, the Istanbul prosecutor, on Wednesday said that Khashoggi was strangled shortly after entering the consulate and that his body was dismembered afterward.

Khashoggi was killed when he walked into the Saudi consulate in Istanbul last month, according to a Turkish prosecutor.

While insisting the United States did not condone Khashoggi's killing, the top USA diplomat said the United States had "deep and long-term strategic relationships" with Saudi Arabia and "we intend to make sure that those relationships remain intact".

Former CIA official Bruce Riedel said: "This is a character assassination added to premeditated murder".

Amid media reports of the Saudi Crown Prince's alleged connection to the murder, the Kingdom continues to insist that Mohammed bin Salman was not involved in the death of his prominent critic.

Turkish investigators now do not believe such a person exists, The Washington Post reported on Wednesday, citing an unnamed senior Turkish official. Riyadh initially denied involvement in the murder. Rather than weighing Prince Mohammed's chances of retaining power, officials in the White House and around the region have turned instead to the question of what effect the lingering stigma of the killing may have on the grand plans laid out by the 33-year-old prince, who could rule Saudi Arabia for the next half century.

Saudi Arabia has changed its account of what happened to Khashoggi.

"Jamal Khashoggi was not a member of the Muslim Brotherhood".

"We have requested information from Saudi officials regarding the whereabouts of Jamal Khashoggi's body and the identity of the supposed local collaborator. To claim otherwise would be ridiculous", the statement said.

His body has not yet been found, but Turkey, the United States and Saudi Arabia have all agreed that he was killed at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on 2 October.

But, as Saudi Arabia faces a torrent of worldwide condemnation over the murder of the royal insider-turned-critic, the location of his body remains a mystery.

Turkey is seeking the extradition of 18 Saudi suspects detained in Saudi Arabia over the killing of Khashoggi.
