Sheriff's Office to Round up Hundreds of Sex Offenders on Probation

There are 25 registered sex offenders living in Flagler County who have specific sanctions: They can not hand out candy, decorate for the holiday or leave their porch light on during Halloween.

The move is a step up on the already existing Georgia law which prohibits registered sex offenders from decorating their homes for Halloween. "With the Halloween on the square not taking place this year, I fully expect the neighborhoods to be very active with children trick-or-treating", Long added.

You can also call toll-free 1-877-234-0085 if you have questions or to report potential Halloween violations by a registered sex offender in the community. "Make sure to avoid houses which are marked with the attached posted signs in front of their residents", the sheriff wrote.

TBI has created a web page where people can type in their home address and find out where sex offenders live around them.

"Warning! Stop", the sign said.

Sheriff Long insists he has taken the unusual measure to ensure local children are kept safe.

Registered sex offenders can not participate in Halloween in any way. They are not allowed to hand out candy, put up Halloween decorations or have their exterior lights on.

These restrictions on sex offenders are nothing new in the USA, with parts of Virginia, Delaware and Texas also requiring offenders on probation or parole report to a designated location.

"If we can do a follow up within 24 hours then we feel like we've at least tried to give somebody an opportunity", Terry said.

The Springfield Police Department offers more safety tips for families and trick-or-treaters ahead of the holiday's festivities on their website.

Long said he and his deputies placed the signs on the edges of offenders' yards on Saturday and they would be removed on Thursday morning.

"As far as sex offenders concerns, it's really not a good time because kids are with their parents, they're with groups of kids, they're not isolated", Crook said.
