Apple's iOS 12.1 software update should land tomorrow

With this, users will be able to conduct FaceTime video calls with up to 32 participants. Even though iPhone's Portrait mode still struggles to work accurately with curly hair, etc., I feel like this is probably the biggest feature for me in iOS 12.1.

Automatic detection of active speakers: FaceTime uses on-device intelligence to display the most prominent speakers on the call, automatically highlighting the current speaker by bringing them to the forefront.

While users are still enjoying the new features that came with iOS 12, reports about iOS 12.1 beta have been exciting. One can tap a specific person's tile and bring them to center as well. Chief among these is the introduction of Group FaceTime, however there are a few caveats.

In addition to Group FaceTime, the user guide also notes dual-SIM functionality for iPhone "XR", "XS" and "XS Max" will go live when the iOS point update sees release. These new emoji are also coming to the Apple Watch and Mac, according to Apple. With iOS 12.1, users can now dynamically adjust the depth of field in real-time preview.

Portrait mode in iOS already enables users to adjust the bokeh after the photo is taken.

Apple's updated guide also mentions some features and improvements that were introduced earlier this year with iOS 12, such as enhanced performance for older iOS devices like the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6. With iOS 12.1, users can now dynamically adjust the depth of field in real-time preview in addition to post-capture, enabling more control to create portraits with a handsome background blur.

Explaining the new feature, Apple continued: "With iOS 12.1, FaceTime is more fun and flexible, with simple ways to add another person, join an active FaceTime call, or use the same camera effects available in Messages to add stickers, filters or appear to friends and family as an Animoji or Memoji".
