What Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 tells us about three emerging smartphone trends

The front dual-camera setup is hidden on a magnetic mechanical slider, so you basically push the entire back up, or pull the front down, whatever you like to call it.

Over the past several weeks, Xiaomi gave us a glimpse of various key features of the new Mi Mix 3 including its bezel-less design, slider mechanism that holds a dual front camera and 10GB RAM.

But compared to the 8.6mm-thick Mate 20 Pro, the Mi Mix 3 is actually thinner (again, the latter packs a smaller battery than the 4200mAh of the former, which helps to explain the thickness difference).

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 is here officially and it's not only brining with it a bezel-free screen and 10GB or RAM but it's the world's first 5G connected handset to go on sale.

The device joins the LG G7 ThinQ, OnePlus 6, and Samsung Galaxy 9 lineup in being powered by Qualcomm's premium Snapdragon 845 mobile platform, a chip created to be ultra fast with top-of-the-line performance.

The Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 will be available at a starting price of RMB 3,299 (approx Rs 34,800) for the 6GB RAM and 64GB storage, RMB 3,599 (approx Rs 38,000) for the 8GB/128GB configuration and RMB 3,999 (aapprox Rs 42,200) for the 256GB storage variant. On the camera front, the handset has four cameras in total. That's important - the Mi Mix 3 also signals that the company is willing to take risks in order to challenge smartphone leaders Apple and Samsung.

The most impressive part of the Mi MIX 3's design is the body's sliding mechanism. The 10GB model is a "Forbidden City Palace Museum" special edition variant that comes with 256GB of storage and will cost 4,999 yuan ($720).

Another camera feature highlighted by Xiaomi is slow motion video recording. The company says the slider of the device has a life expectancy of 300,00 cycles. You simply slide the phone down to launch the selfie camera.

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 won't come to the United States, let's just get that out of the way.

Also new is a dedicated button for bringing up the Xio AI voice assistant, though this works only in Chinese. The Mi MIX 3 has 24-megapixel and 2-megapixel cameras on the front.

Xiaomi did tease 5G support for the Mi MIX 3 quite recently, but the models that were introduced today do not offer such support. For selfies, the Mi 8 Lite uses a 24MP Sony IMX576 sensor with AI Portrait and AI Makeup Beauty features.

The Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 will be available in three colors; Onyx Black, Sapphire Blue, and Jade Green.

Storage: The 6GB variant comes with 128GB of internal storage whereas the 8GB version offers 128GB and 256GB of internal storage.
