United Nations envoy warns Gaza is imploding, warns of 'new conflict' approaching

The Hamas-led committee organizing the riots released a video marking the 30th week since the "March of Return" campaign was launched with the slogan: "Together Gaza rises up and the West Bank unites."The video calls the Palestinians to attend Friday's riots in droves".

Last Friday, some 14,000 Palestinians thronged to the perimeter fence, burning tires and throwing rocks, firebombs and grenades at soldiers on the other side.

Gaza's Health Ministry reported 77 Palestinians were wounded by Israeli fire and six of them were in serious condition.

Hamas has said the protests will continue until there is an easing of the Egyptian-Israeli blockade of the Palestinian enclave that was imposed after the Islamic group seized control of Gaza from the Palestinian Authority in 2007 in an armed coup. The number of refugees who left Palestinian lands after the creation of the Jewish state, together with the descendants is approaching five million.

"The nature of the Israeli army's response to violence along the fence [i.e., buffer zone] is expected to change with the deployment of armor and engineering and artillery forces around Gaza", the IBA reported. "And Israeli security forces must exercise maximum restraint in the use of live ammunition".

Israel ramped up its armored forces along the Gaza border on Thursday in a daylight show of force, a day after a Palestinian rocket destroyed a home in southern Israel.

Director general of the Egyptian General Intelligence Directorate Ayman Badie met Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh then traveled to Israel to meet National Security Adviser Meir Ben-Shabbat and senior officials in Shin Bet within the ongoing communication procedure to reach calm in Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin convened his security Cabinet on Wednesday and pledged to take "very strong action".

The IDF said protesters broke through the fence in three locations before immediately returning to the coastal enclave, with Israeli soldiers opening fire at the suspects in one case.

Kites and balloons equipped with incendiary devices were launched across the border into southern Israel, and the Israeli army said one of its aircraft targeted a group of men launching balloons.

United Nations envoy Nickolay Mladenov also urged all sides "to exercise restraint, to proceed in a peaceful manner, and to avoid escalation".

Friday's violence broke out despite one of the main organizers of the protests calling on participants on Thursday night to behave nonviolently in the demonstration, following a flareup between Israel and Hamas that threatened to spark all-out war.
