Trump hints that Mnuchin may skip Saudi conference

Turkish officials believe Mr Khashoggi was murdered by Saudi agents but Riyadh has always strongly denied this.

Saudi Arabia are preparing a report that will acknowledge that Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi's death was the result of an interrogation that went wrong.

If Riyadh goes public with its new explanation, it would require a reversal of its previous claim that Khashoggi had left the consulate alive.

After gathering information from the Turks and the joint team, "the feeling from the leadership was we needed an internal investigation to make sure we're getting the right story here", the Saudi official said.

CNN reported that the Saudis were going to admit the killing had occurred but deny the king or crown prince had ordered it.

Saudi Arabia has responded to Western statements by saying it would retaliate against any pressure or economic sanctions "with greater action", and Arab allies rallied to support it.

The king said Turkey and Saudi Arabia enjoy close relations and "that no-one will get to undermine the strength of this relationship", according to a statement on the state-run Saudi Press Agency.

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump raised the possibility on Monday that "rogue killers" — and not the kingdoms leaders — were behind the disappearance of a Saudi dissident journalist.

The crown prince, ambitious, aggressive and just 33 in a kingdom long ruled by aging monarchs, has considerable weight in Saudi government actions.

She told reporters: "I have expressed my very deep concerns over what appears to have occurred in Turkey".

Trump last week vowed to uncover the truth about what happened to Khashoggi and promised "severe punishment" for those responsible.

"Canada remains very troubled by the disappearance of prominent Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and calls for a through, credible and transparent investigation into the serious allegations about Mr. Kashoggi's disappearance".

A pro-government Turkish daily published preliminary evidence last week from investigators who it said had identified a 15-member Saudi intelligence team that arrived in Istanbul on diplomatic passports hours before Khashoggi disappeared. At this moment there are no plans to change the Formula E calendar this season.

Trump said he could not confirm such reports.

How was the consulate search conducted?

Surveillance footage captured him entering through the consulate's main entrance, but he was never seen leaving.

Saudia Arabia is allegedly lining up a takeover bid for Manchester United as the kingdom faces global scrutiny over the disappearance of a Saudi journalist. The Turkish government has, however, allegedly informed USA officials about video and audio in their possession that suggests the journalist was tortured and murdered by a team of Saudis inside the building, according to the Washington Post.

The conference, hosted by Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, is nicknamed "Davos in the Desert".

In protest of Khashoggi's disappearance, several USA businesses leaders have pulled out of next week's Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh, dubbed "Davos in the Desert", after the annual meeting of world economic interests in Switzerland.
