At least 10 dead in explosion at Crimean college

Eighteen people were killed when gunmen burst into a college in the Black Sea region of Crimea, set off a bomb in the cafeteria, and went through the building shooting anyone they saw, officials and the college's director have said. There are dead and injured; no other details have been officially reported yet.

He told Russian state television that a single suspect, a 22-year-old male student of the college, killed himself after the alleged attack. "There are people with machine guns there", locals say.

Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin, told reporters that officials are investigating.

The National Anti-Terrorism Committee's spokesman Andrei Przhezdomsky said the building is now being combed for other explosive devices.

The National Anti-Terrorism Committee said in a statement that the blast at the college, in the city of Kerch in eastern Crimea, was caused by an explosive device. Most of the victims were students.

Around 20 people have been rushed to hospital by paramedics and doctors are expected around 50 more wounded.

"According to provisional information, ten people died, and 50 were injured", National Anti-Terror Committee spokesman Andrei Przhedomskikh told official news agency TASS. Located in the easternmost tip of Crimea's Kerch peninsula, the area is connected to mainland Russian Federation by the newly-built massive Crimean bridge. Then, armed with assault rifles, they were running around the second floor, opening doors to the classrooms and killing everyone who came their way... a real terrorist attack!

The blast is the first fatal attack on the territory of Russian Federation since a suicide bomber killed 16 people on the St. Petersburg metro in April previous year.
