Status Orange weather warning for Galway extended into Friday evening

Northern Ireland, Wales, western Scotland and the north of England are forecast to see the worst of the weather.

"Although the winds will ease quickly across Northern Ireland and much of Scotland, there is a chance that a separate swathe of very strong winds with gusts of 70-80 miles per hour may affect the Outer Hebrides and the far northwest of the Scottish mainland for a time in the afternoon, before easing during the evening".

The Department of Education has said that schools and colleges should stay closed on Friday if there is a risk to safety due to the arrival of Storm Callum.

Cork and Kerry are also affected by the status orange wind warning, but those counties have been advised to adhere to the warning between 10pm tonight and 9am in the morning.

The main impacts for the United Kingdom will be from heavy rain across some western areas on Friday and Saturday, with yellow Met Office weather warnings for wind and rain now in place for Friday and Saturday.

Met Éireann said strong winds associated with Storm Callum could reach speeds of between 110km/h and 130km/h.

However, as Friday progresses the winds are likely to ease across some parts of Northern Ireland. Winds of up to 130km are expected in coastal ares along with heavy rain and a risk of flooding. High sided vehicles and motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable to strong winds - slow down and give extra space to pedestrians and cyclists.

"There is the also the risk of coastal flooding due to high tides and surge".

Coming into effect at 10:00pm, the warning will expire at 9:00am tomorrow morning in these counties.

Winds of up to 60 miles per hour are also expected to hit Pembrokeshire, which combined with high tides could lead to some coastal impact due to large waves.

There is also a yellow warning of heavy rainfall for the north of England and parts of Scotland on Saturday.
