Sony announces it will let you change your PSN ID in 2019

The much-requested PSN Online ID Change feature is now entering PlayStation's Preview Program. It's opening the feature to the PlayStation Preview program so certain users can test it.

The PSN name change feature will be available for everyone in early 2019. It was a pleasant surprise, as it's something users have wanted for as long as the PlayStation Network has existed. Now, you won't be able to change your name quite yet, but rest assured that it's coming. Sony's giving you the first change free, but after that you'll have to fork out $9.99; PlayStation Plus members will pay slightly less at $4.99. During this time, testers will be able to change their name as much as they want, with the ability to display their new name and their previous moniker for easier recognition.

To be honest, though, this sounds like it's been a complex feature for Sony to implement. That said, it's not a wholly rosy picture. "Changes to online ID can be made through the Settings menu or the Profile page of your PS4".

Microsoft would in fact charge Xbox Live users a fee to change their name, which many players obliged to, but Sony were still reluctant.

Can I change my PSN name back to the old one?

But don't worry, before the feature is officially rolled out PlayStation will publish a list of compatible games and applications. There'll be a short wait after that, with the feature set to officially roll out for all users sometime in early 2019. The PSN ID change will work on PS4 games originally published after April 1, 2018. This feature has been requested endlessly since the PlayStation Network was launched back in 2006, and now, almost 12 years later, Sony is finally ready to flip the switch on this functionality.

If you're already in the PlayStation Preview Program, you'll be able to try out the PSN name change feature "soon", and keep name-swapping away through the end of November when the preview is scheduled to end.
