Bale, De Bruyne among first Ballon d'Or nominees

Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo, who joined Juventus from Real Madrid in the summer, won last year's Ballon d'Or.

"Whether it's Grizou (Griezmann), Kylian (Mbappe) or Raph' (Varane), they deserve it much more than me", Pogba told AFP.

Antoine Griezmann is one of the great favorites to take the prize due to his triumphs in the Europe League, the UEFA Super Cup title and, above all, the World Cup in Russian Federation, where he was one of the most outstanding players.

De Bruyne was nominated for helping City win the Premier League and Belgium reach the World Cup semi-finals.

"I cannot designate one".

Paul Pogba says he would love a Frenchman to win the Ballon d'Or, but does not believe it should be him.

Each panel member will pick their top five from the shortlist, with their first choice earning six points, their second four, their third three, their fourth two and their fifth one.

"In this best team in the world, there must be the best player in the world, right?"

Ronaldo is the defending champion, having won his fifth Ballon d'Or in 2017.

"In any case, that is how I see it".

Specialist magazine France Football, which has awarded the prize since 1956, announced the 30 nominees for the calendar year trophy, among whom a victor will be chosen by a group of respected football journalists from around the world. Afterwards, there are votes, opinions, different judgements. The victor of the prestigious Ballon d'Or organised by France Football magazine will be announced on December 3.
