Lopetegui confirms Bale, Benzema injuries

Los Blancos were pushing for a return to winning ways after they suffered a shock 1-0 loss to CSKA Moscow in the UEFA Champions League earlier this week.

The goal did arrive but it was Alaves who found the back of the net, with Manu Garcia firing home close range in second-half stoppage time.

Unfortunately, that proved to be Los Blancos' only chance of the first half, as the likes of Benzema, Gareth Bale and Dani Ceballos were frustrated in the final third.

Real Madrid have extended their losing streak to four straight games with a 1-0 loss away at Alaves in La Liga.

"This is a very tough moment and it's clear that the coach is the first person responsible", Lopetegui told a news conference. "Today we had some good chances but the injuries to Bale and Benzema punished us a lot", he added.

Madrid remain in second position, level on points with rivals Barcelona, who will be travelling to Valencia on Sunday.

Defeat has left Real coach Julen Lopetegui fighting for his job.

The former Spain coach also had to take off Bale later in the game, replacing him with Brazilian teenager Vinicius Jr, and earlier he had withdrawn defensive midfielder Casemiro for Spain forward Asensio in a desperate bid to find a goal.

Alaves continued to snuff out any danger, though, and Garcia's last-gasp strike turned the visitors' frustrations into despair. "We have the worldwide break now, so we can get back to what we're doing". I think we started the game quite well, which is what we wanted, but the fact we have not scored has punished us.

"It's the dream victory because we scored so late and they couldn't even take kick off", he said.
