"He had an advantage, and the officers couldn't get to the ones that were down", Boone said.

Brown says Carraway "had a heart of gold". Florence Police Officer Terrence Carraway died from his injuries.

"I have been shooting competitively since 1984 and lovin' it".

"He was a giant of a man, the proverbial gentle giant, and I loved him", Heidler said.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott - the sheriff leading the investigation - said the focus is on taking care of those who have been shot and their families. Florence Police Chief Allen Heidler said the officers were overwhelmed during the ambush. Police eventually arrested the suspect and took them into custody. They also did not identify the wounded officers or describe their conditions.

Sgt. Terrence Carraway, just shy of 31 years on the Florence Police Department, died of his wounds Wednesday night.

Both Heidler and Florence County Sheriff Kenney Boone had tears in their eyes as they spoke to reporters about two hours after the standoff ended.

Authorities said the gunman, Fred Hopkins, is a Vietnam veteran who opened fire as officers came to the house to serve a search warrant.

Of the three surviving police officers, one suffered a graze wound to his head and was paralyzed on one side. But instead of cooperating, the shooter barricaded himself in the home with children and started spraying bullets across the neighborhood, police said.

The violence stunned people in the area, where many have been dealing with record flooding from Hurricane Florence.

Armed with a search warrant, sheriff's deputies were attempting to enter the home to investigate a 27-year-old who lives there for sexual assault, according to law enforcement sources.

'Thanks to our MRAP, armored personnel carrier, we made sure all the officers that were shot were protected and brought for medical attention, ' he said.

Officials did not identify the wounded officers or describe their conditions.

It was a stunning shooting in an area already reeling from record flooding from Hurricane Florence.

"Surprised is probably an understatement", Goin said of the shooting in the neighborhood where he has lived for 20 years.

The Officer Down Memorial Page lists the names of 23,409 United States police officers killed in the line of duty - 113 so far this year. McGurn says this is one of those scenarios where you'd never think it'd happen near you.

More than a dozen relatives and friends of Carraway sat in his Darlington home Thursday afternoon, quietly sitting on couches as news coverage of the shooting played on a TV.

President Donald Trump tweeted his 'thoughts and prayers, ' saying 'We are forever grateful for what our Law Enforcement Officers do 24/7/365'.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster took to social media asking the public for their prayers. The 52-year-old officer had served in Florence for 30 years, the AP reports.
