Prosecutors: Boston Celtics Player Jabari Bird Choked And Kicked Girlfriend

Boston Celtics guard Jabari Bird was arrested over the weekend and arraigned Thursday on a series of disturbing charges, and the team has finally chose to address the situation. The Celtics organization deplores domestic violence of any kind, and we are deeply disturbed by the allegations against Jabari Bird.

He was arrested September 7 after he allegedly assaulted a woman, identified in court as a girlfriend, in Brighton, Mass. Bail was set at $50,000 cash.

Bird pleaded not guilty to felony kidnapping, felony assault and battery with a risky weapon, strangulation and assault and battery of a household member.

Bird's release includes conditions of no drugs or alcohol, no weapons, and court-ordered supervision by his high school coach.

The prosecution asked Bird to be held on $100,000 bail, but the judge decided on $50,000 cash.

According to reports, Bird's girlfriend says he detained her for four hours on Friday afternoon in their Brighton apartment.

The woman told police she was able to leave after Bird passed out with "seizure-like" symptoms.

Bird's lawyer, former federal prosecutor Brian Kelly, said his client "understands the seriousness of the allegations" but said there are two sides to the story. I apologize to my family, the Celtics organization, my teammates, the fans and the National Basketball Association for the unnecessary distraction that I have caused, ' his statement read.

The Celtics have called the allegations disturbing and said the team's "thoughts are with the victim".

The team notes that domestic violence issues are handled by the NBA's main office. "The information that has been released does not tell the full story. She said Bird texted her that he would kill himself if she didn't come back". I do not condone violence against women. He spent most of his rookie season with the Maine Red Claws, the Celtics' G League affiliate, but signed a new deal with the Celtics in July after performing well in both the G League and the NBA Summer League. Only the first year of the contract is guaranteed, and it could be voided, depending on how Bird's case plays out.

Bird could face up to 10 years in prison if he's found guilty of the kidnapping and/or assault and battery charges.
