Canelo Alvarez defeats Gennady Golovkin for middleweight title

Canelo Alvarez defeats Gennady Golovkin for middleweight title

After 12 rounds, Alvarez would be announced the victor of the bout via majority decision, winning the WBC middleweight title.

Canelo Alvarez, left, lands a punch on Gennady Golovkin.

However, the judges controversially ruled in Canelo's favour, handing Golovkin his first loss as a professional and giving Canelo the title of the new middleweight champion.

Mexican star Alvarez produced a performance of guts and resilience to inflict the first defeat of Golovkin's career with a majority decision at the T-Mobile Arena. While the fight itself was a masterpiece, the controversy surrounding the resulting split draw and puzzling 118-110 nod for Canelo left a dark cloud over an otherwise stellar showing from both men. There were no knockdowns, but the action was spirited throughout as the two battled to the final bell before a frenzied crowd at the T-Mobile Arena. This time around, a victor was declared as the judges who saw the tilt tipping over to Mexican's side, 115-113, outnumbered the lone judge who scored the fight 114-114. The AP scored it 114-114.

The fight came after an acrimonious weigh-in during which Alvares nearly head-butted Golovkin, who is known affectionately through the boxing world as "Triple-G".

Golovkin endured a slow start - by his standards, before taking over the contest in the mid-to-late rounds and seemingly doing enough - but only just.

Originally, the pair fought previous year in September in Las Vegas. "I think we controlled the fight".

Ringside punch stats showed a close fight, though they favoured Golovkin by a small margin. "Canelo fought a great fight tonight, and you can't take that away from Canelo".

"I had it close going into the 12th round", Sanchez said. "Hopefully there'll be a third fight".

When asked about a third fight, he said: "Under the right conditions, yes". "For now I'm going to enjoy it with my family".

"There's no doubt about it. Golovkin won the fight", Atlas said.

"We were controlling the fight". Sanchez told Golovkin after the eighth round.

'Some very close rounds that could have gone either way.

Alvarez took home a majority decision in the rematch after the two met in a controversial split draw a year ago, winning the WBA (Super), WBC, IBO, and vacant The Ring Magazine middleweight titles.

The two were initially scheduled for a May 5 rematch, but it was canceled after Alvarez tested positive twice for the banned substance clenbuterol.

Needless to say, tons of pros chimed in on tonight's highly anticipated fight.

And the tactic paid off as Canelo dethroned Golovkin on Mexican Independence Day.

"If the people want another round, I'll do it again", said Alvarez, who improves to 50-1-2. "It was a clear victory".

However, as the bout transpired, the two fighters were neck and neck.

Many argued the two-weight world title holder "robbed" Golovkin of another victory.
