Border Patrol agent arrested in Texas as a suspected serial killer

"We have very strong evidence that he is the person who has been killing", Sheriff Cuellar said at a press conference posted on CNN affiliate KGNS's Facebook page. "Fortunately, he's now been apprehended". The sheriff described the veteran Border Patrol agent as a "serial killer". Some are calling for an end to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which was created in 2003. Ortiz fled from police who found him cowering inside a truck in the parking lot outside a local hotel in the city about 145 miles southwest of San Antonio. He was arrested on suspicion of evading arrest.

Juan David Ortiz, 35, faces five felony charges, according to Webb County District Attorney Isidro R. "Chilo" Alaniz. On Thursday a 42-year-old woman was found critically injured by the side of a highway and died in hospital.

Alaniz said investigators are still trying to determine a motive for the killings.

In fact, Ortiz allegedly had a fifth victim, a woman who escaped and helped police track down her assailant, the CBS report said. Alaniz said two of them were USA citizens but the nationalities of the other two were not yet known. She claimed that the agent, a married father of two young children, had torn off her blouse before she could run away from his vehicle.

Alaniz told The Texas Tribune that after Ortiz picked up the fifth woman she quickly realized that she was in danger. "While it is CBP policy to not comment on the details of an ongoing investigation, criminal action by our employees is not, and will not be tolerated", the agency said.

Texas authorities have arrested a Border Patrol agent they say is responsible for a string of recent murders in southern Texas. The body of a 29-year-old mother-of-two was found on 4 September, the Laredo Times said. Two of the women have not been fully identified, officials said. The agent, Esteban Manzanares, killed himself as officers closed in on his South Texas home. We have agreed to work together on the hiring and professionalism of border patrol agents. However, this is the second instance this year involving a Border Patrol agent killing someone in Laredo. "It could have been a P.D. It could have been a state trooper".
