Liberia President Weah makes shock playing return against Nigeria

On Tuesday, however, he briefly returned to football, playing for his country in a specially arranged friendly against Nigeria in Monrovia.

All of the Liberia players - including Weah's former teammate, 48-year-old James Debbah - wore shirts bearing the message "Thank you King George" on the front.

"We were paid $2,000 each by the President of Liberia", one of the players at the game said.

Wenger, who left Arsenal last year, spotted Weah's talent while Monaco manager all of 30 years ago and brought him the principality in 1998.

In what must surely be a first, Weah was deployed in the unlikely role of player/president (surely a footballing first) against the Super Eagles in Monrovia.

However, fans were stunned when the former Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan striker led the line within the starting XI, almost two decades since announcing his retirement.

Although sporting a little extra weight than in his playing days, the 51-year-old still showed some fleet-footedness and managed 79 minutes before leaving the field to a standing ovation. I looked up to the likes of Stephen Keshi, Rashidi Yekini, Friday Ekpo and others.

He commending the Federal Government, Nigeria Football Federation and the Super Eagles for the honour done to him on the occasion which was to celebrate his contributions to Liberian football.

Etebo took the corner from which Simeon Nwankwo headed Nigeria into a 2-0 lead after Henry Onyekuru - on loan at Galatasaray from Everton - had scored the opener.

Former Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille star Weah is not expected to continue his worldwide career beyond this match.
